Prominent Bitcoin Developer, Pieter Wuille, Shares New Script Programming Language, Miniscript

Bitcoin programmer, Pieter Wuille, officially released the “Miniscript” – a subset of Bitcoin’s Script language – after months of speculation and discussion across the blockchain’s development community. Peter, alongside Andrew Poelstra and Sanket Sanjalkar, developed the language for the past year to allow Bitcoin’s script to be “in a structured way, enabling analysis, composition, generic […]

SegWit Creator Pieter Wuille Introduces Miniscript, a New Bitcoin Smart Contract Language

Coinspeaker SegWit Creator Pieter Wuille Introduces Miniscript, a New Bitcoin Smart Contract LanguageIn recent news, Peter Wuille, the creator of SegWit has come out with a new work. This time it is a completely new programming language called Miniscript, which is meant for creating smart contracts on the Bitcoin network. Peter posted this new idea on the Bitcoin developer mailing list on Monday, this week. In general, he and two other programmers Andrew Poelstra and Sanket Sanjalkar were working on this code for about a year. When asked – “Why post only now?” – he replied that the project has reached the point where it needs some public attention. “Miniscript is a language for writing (a subset of) Bitcoin Scripts in a structured way, enabling analysis, composition, generic signing and more,” it’s defined on their website. So what Peter actually did? Let’s try to understand. So to understand, we’ll need to revisit what is Script – the current Bitcoin smart contract programming language. That is a Bitcoin code feature which allows you to specify certain conditions under which the spending of Bitcoins can actually occur. Whether you want the beneficiary to receive it after a specific period of time or you just want your transaction to be a part of a multi-sig system which requires the signatures of multiple participants in the transaction. So far, this is what Script offered to the Bitcoin network. However, Miniscript – the new language written by Peter, is built on top of Script and is designed to optimize it by shortening the code and making it more “readable”. So, for example, if in the Script programming language the code looks like this:OP_CHECKSIG OP_IFDUP OP_NOTIF OP_DUP OP_HASH160 <hash160 (B)>OP_EQUALVERIFY OP_CHECKSIGVERIFY <144> OP_CSV OP_ENDIFThen in Miniscript it looks like this:or_d (c: pk (A), and_v (vc: pk_h (B), older (144)))So as you can see, the code is optimized by being shorter and more structured. According to Wuille, Miniscript is a completely new way of writing structured scripts that provides the ability to conduct various types of static analysis, generate generic signatures and a modifiable set of conditions for executing smart contracts.“Suppose a company wants to protect funds stored in cold storage using a 2-of-3 multi-signature system with three members. One of the participants, however, has its own good set based on two-factor authentication, multi-signature and time lock. Why not make the entire company system one of the multi-signature participants,” Peter writes in his Twitter account. At the moment, Miniscript is available in two programming languages – C++ and Rust. While the coders are still in works on developing this new language, they say that with all the tests they had, now they feel safe that the code can be implemented within the Bitcoin network. Moreover, in the future, they plan to develop a structure which would support future script changes for Bitcoin.All-in-all, Peter believes this is a very useful feature for Bitcoin and hopes that the developer community will accept his innovation. SegWit Creator Pieter Wuille Introduces Miniscript, a New Bitcoin Smart Contract Language

SegWit Inventor Pieter Wuille Joins Lightning Torch Bitcoin Relay

Veteran cryptographer and Segregated Witness (SegWit) inventor Pieter Wuille has become the latest high-profile figure to participate in the Bitcoin Lightning Network’s Lightning torch event. ‘We Wouldn’t Be Here Without You’ Wuille, whom many regard as instrumental in Bitcoin’s success, saw considerable positive feedback as he ‘took’ the Lightning Network (LN) Torch — a gesture which has gained significant prestige since it launched in January. A transaction relay at its heart, Lightning Torch involves ‘passing around’ a Bitcoin transaction using the Lightning Network, with each custodian adding a nominal sum of 10,000 satoshis ($0.387) before forwarding it elsewhere. The project has become a symbol of the borderless and increasingly easy-to-use Bitcoin payment platform, and the LN Torch has now gone around the world — to countries including the US and, more recently, Iran. “Honored to have you participating Pieter! Thanks for all you have done. We wouldn’t be here without you,” the Torch’s initiator, Twitter user hodlonaut, commented after Wuille confirmed he had received and forwarded the transaction. According to official monitoring resource TakeTheTorch, Wuille was the 231st custodian — having received the Torch from Bitcoin mining operator SlushPool. Thanks for letting me participate in the #LNTrustChain, @slush_pool! Who wants the #LNTorch next? Send me an invoice for 3.77 msats! https://t.co/y8LGIuDGm5 — Pieter Wuille (@pwuille) March 6, 2019 Lightning Torch’s Prestigious Guest List Previous participants include HashCash creator and Blockstream CEO Adam Back, as well as non-Bitcoin figures such as Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. The latter gave both Bitcoin and Lightning Network a conspicuous publicity boost in February when, along with participating in the Torch, he signaled that LN micropayments would be launching on his payments company, Square. “We would love to make [Bitcoin] as fast and efficient and transactional as possible, and that includes looking at our seller base and register,” he said at the time. “It’s not an ‘if;’ it’s more of a ‘when.’” An ongoing lobbying effort also remains underway to involve Tesla founder Elon Musk in Lightning Torch. The mogul has thus far not given any public comment on the idea. Lightning, meanwhile, continues to grow to support more funds than ever, with an overall capacity of 750 BTC ($2.89 million) at press time — a monthly increase of 18 percent.  What do you think about Pieter Wuille participating in Lightning Torch? IOTA Introduces Permanode Tech For Long-Term Data-Storage

The IOTA Foundation is taking a major step towards ensuring permanency in the Tangle, announcing a “Permanode” technology called Chronicle. IOTA is designed as a protocol for the permissionless and frictionless exchange of value between machines and humans, with the Tangle acting as a distributed ledger. Using the new permanode technology, users will be able to securely store data, where it will be  “verifiable to third parties for free.”   While some data doesn’t need to be stored for years, decades, or lifetimes, certain sorts of data require greater permanence. “For example,” the IOTA blog explains, “financial data must be stored for 10 years in some cases, and identity data needs to be kept for the lifetime of the identity.”  The IOTA Foundation describes the new permanode technology as a “crucial building block” for enabling these types of use-cases. The Foundation describes Chronicle as the “official permanode solution,” enabling easy access to the Tangle’s entire history, which is stored indefinitely via the technology.  The system is described as a “distributed fault-tolerant permanode that scales out and up…”     source: IOTA Foundation   Chronicle has some unique and interesting use-cases for community members and businesses, such as offering “query as a service.” Node owners might find a new stream of revenue charging IOTA tokens to access Tangle data. Further services could be added through “Multiplex networks,” offering “microservices… that can communicate with public and private dataset(s) under different policies.”  Chronicle is due for a third-party audit to ensure it is ‘water-tight’ before it is released to the public. The IOTA Foundation invites community members to take part in the work, with grants available for “developing and expanding the notion of permanodes.”   source: CoinMarketCap   IOTA joined the altcoin surge today, enjoying a healthy bump of more than 14% in value against USD and BTC over the past 24 hours. The token has enjoyed a positive week, with over 10% growth in USD price over the past seven days.   The post IOTA Introduces Permanode Tech For Long-Term Data-Storage appeared first on Crypto Briefing.
